Dance for All Ages as The Days Project Visits Åland

As part of the Nordic Institute on Åland's 40th anniversary, the internationally acclaimed The Days Project is visiting Åland to perform the production The Days. The performance has toured around the world with the message that dance is for everyone regardless of age, and that every person has something unique to contribute on stage.

The Days is a dance production and workshop program created in collaboration between Finnish artists Maria Nurmela and Ville Oinonen and English choreographer Theo Clinkard. Since its premiere in Finland in 2018, they have toured to Russia, Scotland, Romania, and Switzerland, among other places. In 2022, the tour also reached the United Kingdom and Canada within the framework of the Nordic cultural exchange program Nordic Bridges.

At each location The Days Project visits, workshops in contemporary dance are held for seniors and young people. From these workshops, two participants are then selected to perform in The Days production. On Åland, the workshops are organized in collaboration with Folkhälsan on Åland, among others, and local seniors and young people will also perform on stage together with The Days on November 11. This part of the production has proven to be tremendously enriching both artistically and socially, and offers both older and younger people a valuable opportunity for creative expression, community, and engagement.

The tour is carried out in collaboration with the Regional Dance Centre in Western Finland with support from the Swedish Culture Fund, the Eugène, Elisabeth and Birgit Nygrén Foundation, and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Workshop for senior dance enthusiasts, Trois C-L, Luxemburg

For this new 55+ MOVERS workshop, discover the world of Ville Oinonen, a multidisciplinary Finnish artist exploring dance, performance, and photography. In this workshop, you will engage with the movement material from the performance The Days, focusing on sensitivity and body awareness, practiced both individually and with a partner. Simple physical tasks, gently guided, will allow participants to explore and discover new ways of moving.

Ville began The Days in 2017 in collaboration with artist Maria Nurmela and British choreographer Theo Clinkard. The Days offers an immersive experience for the audience, drawing spectators into a performance that explores resilience and the universal longing for human connection. This captivating journey unfolds between two performers, blending sincere and absurd exchanges.

Ville Oinonen has been working and performing as an independent artist in Finland and abroad for over thirteen years. His work spans various performance forms, from dance films to stage productions, such as The Doghill History of Finland at the Pori Theatre. Throughout his career, Oinonen has received grants from Taike – the Arts Promotion Centre Finland, the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, and the Finnish Cultural Foundation in support of his artistic work.

This project is carried out with the support of the Œuvre Nationale de Secours de la Grande-Duchesse Charlotte.

The Days is a collaboration between the exceptional Finnish dancers Maria Nurmela and Ville Oinonen, and English choreographer Theo Clinkard, who has built an international reputation for creating deeply affecting, visually arresting work. This intimate duet is constructed from a single physical concept that sustains and evolves throughout the work, and engenders a world of ever-shifting negotiations to examine the complexities of coexistence. Caught in a loop of impassioned exchanges, the dancers trace a journey that echoes a lifetime shared, through sublimely nuanced physicality. The Days is a compelling performance about care, resilience and the desire for connection, and delivers a profound emotional impact.

The Days North American tour is supported by The Finnish Cultural Foundation, Taike - the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and Regional Dance Centre of Western Finland and realised in collaboration with BC Movement Arts Society and Vancouver Dance Centre and The Days Project.
